The Growing Illegal Trade of Skin Bleaching Products

November 23, 2008 · 2 Comments

The story of Marcia, a Jamaican woman, is articulated in this video, where she tells us about her physical and psychological scars associated with a long history of skin bleaching.

From the video it is also clear that the illegal trade of skin bleaching products to counties and communities of Colour is significant. Despite banning the sale and resale of skin bleaching products in Europe, they are still widely available for purchase. This is because the production of skin bleaching products in Europe is allowed, as long as it is sold outside of Europe. This has led to the exportation of skin bleaching products to countries without bans, and their subsequent disguise and re-exportation to Europe, where they are sold illegally.

You can also view Tyra Banks’ 40 minute video interviewing black American women about their practice of skin bleaching of self and their children as young as four years.

They can make illegal stuff out of everything. This is so strange and sad.
